Communication and Conflict Management Skills

When people are experiencing distress, misdirected anger is often the result. This workshop will assist participants in their ability to handle anger from clients, coworkers, and colleagues using effective self-regulation and communication techniques. The training offers immediately usable tips for de-escalation as well as insight into this all-too-common behavior many people in front-facing client positions must manage every day.

Compassion Fatigue: Protecting the Helping Professional

Your work should make your life better. But sometimes, those of us who work in the areas of trauma, crisis or mental health can become overwhelmed and even symptomatic from our work. And too often, self-care is not prioritized in our work environments. This workshop invites participants to step outside of their work life and reflect on how their engagement with suffering in their work affects their own lives. It equips participants with essential knowledge for recognizing, addressing and protecting themselves against burnout and vicarious trauma using a combination of presentation, guided individual reflection and group discussion. Participants will leave this session with a sense of how to find balance between their professional and personal lives and their own self-care plan to help put their new ideas into action.

Creating Safety Plans with Clients at Risk

This session will guide participants through the process of creating safety plans for clients at risk. Participants will learn why safety planning is such a powerful component of a self-regulation and how to incorporate this strategy with those they work with. They will work through the completion of a safety plan and gain feedback from peers on the process.

Healthy Boundaries and Professional Use of Self

Healthy boundaries are an essential part of a happy, successful career for any education or helping professional, yet most of us learn how to negotiate these complex relationships on the job, without much opportunity for reflection on how we bring our unique personal attributes to bear on our work—or how our work affects us outside of the job. This workshop aims to give you the opportunity to do just that. We’ll be talking about how much of ourselves we bring to the job, and the pros and cons of personal sharing and engagement at work with youth and coworkers. We’ll discuss workplace culture and the value of cultivating an awareness of our personal attributes, strengths, vulnerabilities, and narratives as they relate to the work we do every day in service to others. We’ll take steps to engage more fully with our work while learning strategies to protect ourselves from the potential hazards of working in a field that has such great potential to fully touch our hearts.

 Helping Individuals with Traumatic Grief

While the experience of grief is universal, those experiencing traumatic grief often have needs that are specific to the experience of trauma. This session will give participants an understanding of traumatic grief and ways to effectively support others in the aftermath of traumatic loss, including losses specific to suicide.

Suicide Prevention for Helping Professionals

Anyone working in a helping profession may one day find themselves working with someone at risk for suicide. The good news is that anyone can prevent suicide if they have the right information and are in the right place at the right time. This workshop is intended to help anyone, regardless of their position, education, or experience, gain the confidence, knowledge, and skill necessary to assist someone who is potentially suicidal. It includes practical information about suicide, an examination of core beliefs, feelings, and attitudes that either promote or impede engagement with suicidal individuals and offers practical application of that knowledge so that participants feel prepared to link at-risk individuals to safety.

Working with Youth who have Experienced Trauma

Trauma is often a core issue for many young people, whether they present as juvenile justice-involved, depressed, anxious, or oppositional. Recognizing underlying trauma and knowing how to engage youth and guide them through recovery is a critical skill set for professionals across every helping modality. This workshop provides practical strategies for those who work with youth who have experienced trauma and may be manifesting behavioral health issues as a result. The presentation includes signs and symptoms of trauma in children and youth, neurobiological effects, and practical strategies for engagement, goal setting, and treatment. It also covers vicarious trauma and self-care for workers, and ways to create safe environments for youth and families suffering the effects of trauma.
